Ring the bells! Shoot the confetti cannons! Hope n' Change Cartoons has just reached its 100th Follower!

According to the Obama administration's right-wing radical scale, that officially makes this blog and its readers a "Festering Splinter." With your help and support, we hope to grow to the rank of "Burr Under the Saddle," followed by "Fly in the Ointment," and maybe...someday...if dreams really do come true, rise all the way to "Pain in the Ass!"

Please know that I'm sincerely grateful to every follower and every daily reader who visits the site. Hope n' Change is a labor of love, designed to inject some wry humor into current politics while also steering people to important and substantive news stories. And of course, it also allows me to scream without scaring the dogs and children.

We're always looking for new ways to build readership - but the simple fact is that YOU can do even more than we can. By telling friends, sending links (there's a little envelope with an arrow at the bottom of the commentary for each cartoon - click it, and you can send the day's cartoon to one friend, or cut-and-paste a whole mailing list), or posting the cartoons to your favorite blogs.

We're all in this together, and Hope n' Change is humbled, honored, and cheered by your support!

Jam It Napolitano

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
With the tough competition for "Dumbest and Most Obvious Lie of 2009" ticking down to its last few days, it looks like Homeland Security director Janet Napolitano may have scored the big win with her pronouncement that "the system worked"...even though it failed to prevent a man with known terrorist connections from taking a powerful bomb aboard a jet and activating the detonator.

Pressed to explain her bizarre remark, Napolitano clarified that she meant "the system worked" after the attempted bomb blast...presumably meaning that a taxpayer-funded defense lawyer was rushed to the Detroit tarmac to make sure Umar Abdulmutallab was fully informed of his rights, and perhaps to help him file suit against the passengers who jumped him.

Napolitano also said that the would-be bomber got his visa during the Bush administration...but failed to mention that the visa wasn't revoked after Abdulmutallab's own father recently warned US authorities that his son was dangerous.

Are other airline terror attacks planned? We have no way of knowing, because Abdulmutallab now has the right to remain silent. Napolitano shares that right, and we wish she'd use it.

Let Them Eat Poi

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
As average Americans struggle with double-digit unemployment, and the Democrats prepare to launch the most expensive (and economy-busting) legislation in a half century, Barack Obama will be vacationing in a $4000-a-day mansion in Kailua, Hawaii ("the favorite beach of Hawaiian royalty").

While in Hawaii, the president will have the opportunity to inspect the tax-supported healthcare system which has caused so many doctors to quit and move that the president of the Hawaii Medical Association likens the state's medical care to a "third world nation." Or he can inspect Hawaii's public schools...as long as he doesn't visit on a Friday - when all the schools are closed because the teacher's union gave themselves 4-day work weeks.

And of course, when in Hawaii the president can pay a ceremonial visit to the "Changing of the Guard" which protects his birth certificate. Have fun, Mr president - and don't hurry back!

Hot Pants

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
The Obama administration barely escaped 2009's second successful terrorist attack on American soil when Umar Abdulmutallab's bomb failed to fully detonate as Flight 253 was descending into Detroit.

As much as we'd like to joke about an "underpants bomb," this is far from a laughing matter. Although Abdulmutallab had known terror connections, and despite the fact that his father had warned US officials months ago, his name was not on the "no fly" list. And it was only two weeks ago that the TSA accidentally released their top secret security manual online, making it possible (and in all likelihood a certainty) that Abdulmutallab knew his bomb components would pass airport security screenings.

And so Umar's 72 virgins will be kept waiting...while the American people keep waiting for this president to get serious about terrorism.

Carol of the Beltway

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Surprising absolutely no one, Harry Reid browbeat, bullied, and bribed Senate Democrats to vote 60-39 in favor of his healthcare bill, early on Christmas Eve.

Assuming full passage by the House, an average family we'll call the "Crachits" will be affected in the following ways:

1) Father Bob Cratchit will have to give up his one lump of coal for the fire at work, owing to the negative health impact of greenhouse gasses.

2) Mrs Cratchit will be strongly encouraged to get federally-funded abortions rather than bring more babies into the world.

3) Lacking health insurance, the family will have to pay new federal fines which will force the children into workhouses.

4) Son Tiny Tim will have his foot chopped off by a greedy diabetes doctor who just can't seem to break the habits he developed before Obama was president.

God bless us, every one.

North Poll

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
As noted Republican pundit Abraham Lincoln once said, "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool Santa any of the time."

Of course, Obama isn't succeeding at fooling most other people these days, either. A recent "Naughty or Nice" Rasmussen poll shows the president's approval rating at only 44%, while a whopping 46% "strongly disapprove" of his performance.

So enjoy your first Christmas in the Whitehouse, Mr president...but don't get used to it.

Yule Log

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Noted holiday elf, Nancy Pelosi, has likened the impending healthcare bill to "a Christmas gift to the American people." Specifically, a gift that people don't want, which doesn't fit, purchased with their own money at an astronomically inflated price.

According to recent polls, only 37% of voters think the Democrats' bill will bring any improvement at all. Stunningly, another poll shows that 37% of people like fruitcake. Is the Democrat-fruitcake connection sheerly statistical coincidence? We think not! And we also think we know what that big, steaming platter is that's headed our way from Washington.

Curly Tales

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
To help ram through a healthcare bill that the American people overwhelming don't want, Harry Reid has been using massive amounts of taxpayer money to buy votes from his Democratic Parliament of Whores*.

Of course, there's nothing new or unusual about buying votes. Obama swept into the presidency by buying the votes of the greedy and ill-informed with promises of free healthcare, jobs, "Obama money," and delicious, delicious pie.

But buying the votes of senators is a bit more complicated because they won't settle for empty promises - they insist on real money, and plenty of it. And the worse the bill is for America, the more expensive those purchased votes become. Currently, the bribes are in the tens of billions...and rising.
What does that tell you?

Job Boom

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
To prove that Women's Liberation has finally found a place in the Middle East, females are now eligible for "martyrdom missions" in which they blow themselves to smithereens in order to free up the men to do more "important" tasks for jihad.

It just goes to show that in the overseas employment market, no "glass ceiling" can stand up against a woman's motivation, intelligence...and a C4 bomb vest.

60 Is The New 30

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Harry Reid has now found (and by "found," we mean bought, bribed, and threatened) the 60 Democratic senators necessary to pass his healthcare bill. To add insult to national injury, the vote is planned for Christmas Eve.

To say "thank you" to Santa for the gifts he brings, the traditional reward is cookies and milk. To say "thank you" to the Democrats for their Christmas Eve gift, we also recommend something traditional: tar and feathers.

(Legal disclaimer: Hope n' Change does not condone or encourage the application of tar and feathers to politicians no matter how badly they betray the voters, but makes the reference purely for satiric purposes. Ha ha ha ha! Pitchforks and torches, on the other hand, are still under review by our legal department.)

Heat Waive

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
As the shouting dies down, it's increasingly clear that the Copenhagen Climate Summit was largely pointless. Absent a real agreement that he could simply sign on to, Barack Obama made a fumbling, angry, cliche-filled speech which disappointed his fellow eco-communists.

As the purpose of the Summit was always more about redistribution of the West's wealth than actual climate change, many attendees were initially enthusiastic about Hillary Clinton's offer for the US to spearhead a $100 billion a year giveaway to developing nations. Fortunately, it now seems more likely that Hell will freeze over before this "international" fund actually starts paying out.

And so the Copenhagen carnival of climategate, faked data, bad poetry, and economic revolution has accomplished nothing...other than adding untold tons of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere from the private jets and limos of the Green intelligentsia.

Precipice of History

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
When Hope n' Change thinks about the great American process of creating legislation, we imagine civilized patriots who write concisely, thoughtfully, and selflessly to create laws for the common good. In other words, we are delusional.

Barack Obama, caught without a teleprompter or a dictionary, said that we are now on "the precipice of Healthcare," meaning we're all at the edge of a cliff...and the Democrats are right behind us, pushing as hard as they can.

Obama breathlessly claims that the nation will go bankrupt unless we pass a bill which paradoxically raises spending and increases debt. Meanwhile, Harry Reid and company are doing their best to hide the details of the bill from the Republicans, the public, the media, and any of their own members who still have a shred of decency...while polls increasingly show that the majority of voters are against this takeover of our health, our liberty, and a large percentage of our economy.

In other words, had these Democrats been running the show in 1776, the preamble to the Constitution wouldn't say "We the people," it would say "Screw the people..."

All About The Benjamins

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Edging out tough competitors like "The Chinese Workers" and Nancy Pelosi, Ben Bernanke (the Chairman of the Federal Reserve) was named Time Magazine's 2009 "Person of the Year."

Oh sure, we're still in a terrible recession, unemployment is skyrocketing, the dollar is plummeting, industries are falling, and the country is at risk of losing its AAA credit rating. But as the Obama Administration likes to frequently say "it could be even worse!"

And so, in these strange days of Hope n' Change, this is what passes for praiseworthy accomplishment: keeping things from being "even worse."

Cold Hard Facts

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
At the Climate Change summit, global warming superstar Al Gore announced a 75% likelihood that the arctic will be ice-free in approximately 5 years. Unfortunately for Gore, the scientist who collected the data says he has no idea how Gore came to this fanciful conclusion. Oops!

Meanwhile, many countries attending the summit have reached the unsurprisingly conclusion that "climate change" can best be addressed by a transfer of billions of dollars from the United States and other developed nations as a way to say "we're sorry." Or maybe just "we're stupid."

Calling Doctor Howard, Doctor Fine, Doctor Howard!

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
According to the non-partisan CMMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), the currently proposed "healthcare reform" bill proposed by Harry Reid will make things much, much, much, much, MUCH worse than they are now.

According to their new report, 1) health care costs would rise by $234 billion; 2) 17 million Americans would be forced out of their existing health insurance; 3) 19 million Americans would pay $29 billion in taxes/fines and receive no health care in return; 4) 33% of all Medicare Advantage customers would lose their health care plan; 5) 18 million Americans would be put on welfare; 6) the $493 billion in Medicare cuts would force 20% of Medicare providers to become unprofitable thus jeopardizing access to care for all seniors; and 7) the explosion in Medicaid recipients would exacerbate existing health care access problems for the poor. (Summary provided by Heritage.org)

Despite this, Democrats are pushing hard to get the bill passed prior to their Christmas break,
so Obama can claim "healthcare reform" as the one and only "accomplishment" for his first year in office. Editorially speaking, Hope n' Change would like to say more, but we need to go change the cotton balls in our ears...

Handy Man

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Kevin Jennings, the so-called "Safe School Czar" appointed by Barack Obama, previously created a group named GLSEN (pronounced "Glisten")...the "Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network."

As part of GLSEN's outreach program, it visited schools and passed out "fisting kits" to children as young as 14 - plastic gloves, KY jelly, and instructions on the dangerous joys of rectal spelunking. They also demonstrated how to repurpose gloves for oral sex ("Put your tongue in the thumb hole"), and created a reading list which emphasized the "pleasure and empowerment" that young boys found when they discovered anonymous bathroom sex with much older men.

Hope n' Change would like to apologize for even talking about these things...and frankly, we didn't want to. But DAMN IT, it's important that we confront a president who thinks men like Kevin Jennings should be in a position to push these dangerous (and frankly appalling) behaviors on schoolkids, and awards him the position of "Safe School Czar" to help enable his agenda.

This is not about being gay or straight...because frankly, we don't care. But we do care about promiscuity, about morality versus immorality, and about protection of children. Which is more than we can say for Mr. Jennings...or Mr. Obama.

Par For The Course

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
If only real life worked like this. But noooo - the news media continues to harp about Tiger Woods violating his marital oath while ignoring the way Democrats violate their oaths in ways that would make practitioners of the Kama Sutra blush.

For instance, the Dems are currently raising the national debt ceiling by another $1.8 trillion (for a total of $14 trillion a year) by slipping it into the fine print of a vital military expense bill, thereby screwing every American...including those who aren't even born yet. But is the media screaming about it? Nope, they're too busy writing editorials about whether Tiger is an anti-black racist because he doesn't treat African-American women like whores.

So in these strange days of Hope n' Change, Tiger Woods is no longer morally fit to be selling Gatorade...but the Democrats and the media can go right on pushing Kool-aid.

Deja Vu All Over Again

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Despite the Climategate Scandal, which has obliterated the scientific argument for manmade global warming, Barack Obama and other world leaders at the Copenhagen Climate Summit are plowing ahead with their "anti-industrial revolution" which will further cripple our economy.

Meanwhile on the home front, the EPA has declared CO2 to be a poison gas so incredibly dangerous that the government must now take control of everything that produces CO2...including your home, your car, and any family members or pets who breathe. The Government also plans to round up all carbonated beverages and imprison them at Guantanamo Bay until they can be safely buried in salt mines far beneath the surface of the Earth.

Airport Insecurity

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Officials with the Transportation Security Administration posted an airport security screening manual online, with all of our (formerly) top secret security vulnerabilities clearly visible - making it a virtual "Terrorism for Dummies" manual for anyone who wants to easily get through airport security with their bombs or other weapons.

Potential terrorists now know that small gauge wires won't pick up in X-rays, that wheelchairs and orthopedic shoes won't be inspected, and that travelers from certain countries get extra screening (so prior to a terror mission, you should fly from an "approved" country). As a special bonus, the manual
also includes samples of identification for Federal Air Marshals, police, and the CIA...making it easy for anyone with Photoshop and a laminator to make a fake ID.

Aren't you glad that the government will never be in charge of keeping all of your financial and medical information confidential? Oh wait...

Insurance Card or Race Card?

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Having run out of sane things to say in support of Obamacare, Senate majority leader Harry Reid has suggested that wanting to "slow down" and think about Healthcare reform is tantamount to supporting slavery.

Interestingly, since Republicans have already been excluded from drafting or revising the Healthcare legislation (and won't vote for it), Reid seems to be pressuring "on the fence" moderate Democrats by accusing them of racism.

Then again, he may not be entirely off the mark - back in 1964, it was
the Democrats who attempted a filibuster to prevent the passage of Civil Rights legislation, led by former Klan member (and current Democratic senator) Robert Byrd.

Six of One

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Attendees at the Copenhagen Climate Conference are declaring that it's immoral for us to exhale, at the same time they're enjoying the loose morality of their host country...and the fact that local prostitutes are giving away free sex to conference guests.

This explains why giggles erupt in the audience whenever Al Gore says things like "an ill wind blows," "warm fronts," "hands on," "backdoor strategy," or "emissions"...and why the conference erupted in hysterical pandemonium when he said sea levels would "rise six inches."

Clear Headed

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Despite his promises for the "most transparent presidency" ever, the Obama administration continues to stonewall on issues large and small ("separation of powers" to prevent the Whitehouse social secretary from explaining a major security breach?). Individuals and media outlets have had to file FOIA lawsuits to pry basic information from this Whitehouse, and "closed door" meetings are now the rule - including today's meeting on "government openness."

We believe that Obama is using a very specific and misleading definition of "transparency" which was suggested by his Loophole Czar...but we can't prove it unless our Freedom of Information Act lawsuit forces the Whitehouse to comment.

Death and Taxes

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
The Democrats are scrambling to ratify a permanent death tax which will grab up to 45% of the estates of the wealthy. However, the "wealth" of the deceased often includes the value of family farms or businesses, which must be sold to pay off the government rather than allowing family members to inherit or keep the businesses running.

So the tax accomplishes two things: it kills jobs when jobs are desperately needed, and it gives liberals more money to pass out to their friends. In Democratic circles, this is known as a "win-win."

Or Under A Cabbage Leaf

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Barack Obama held a "Jobs Summit" because he's naturally curious about where jobs come from, but isn't mature enough yet to handle the economic "birds and bees" truth that job creation requires tax cuts, deficit reduction, and a stable regulatory environment.

And so the president continues to believe in fairytales...and continues funding those fairytales by taking billions of dollars away from the very businesses that would rather be using the money to hire people.

The Bear Truth

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
The so-called Climategate Scandal continues to grow, with more and more evidence of scientific fraud, as well as revelations that researchers actually destroyed the original weather data which could have been used to refute their bogus arguments.

Even so, the Whitehouse continues to insist that "climate change is happening," which doesn't even remotely mean that "global warming is caused by man." Even more troubling is the fact that there is currently no peer-reviewed scientific data which suggests that the climate will stop changing (for the first time since the Earth was formed) if we can simply raise taxes high enough...

The Crowd Goes Wild

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
After thinking longer and more slowly than Rodin's statue of the same name, Barack Obama finally decided that the best way to handle the war in Afghanistan is to reluctantly commit more troops...but only for 18 months, after which we'll get the hell out of Dodge.

Of course, this strategy will only work if the Taliban and Al Qaeda don't know we're going to give up in July of 2011. So please, help keep the president's big secret and don't tell the bad guys!

Swiss Miss

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
When Switzerland recently voted to ban the building of minarets within its borders, reactions were fast and highly polarized. Some see the vote as a last-ditch defense of the European culture against Islamization, while others (notably the U.N.) see the decision as Islamophobic and bigoted.

In the interest of bringing peace to the situation (and perhaps snagging one of those easy-to-win Nobel Peace Prizes), Hope n' Change suggests that in lieu of the new law, the Swiss simply create a Minaret Planning Committee and staff it with the people who are currently in charge of rebuilding New York's "ground zero." That way, nothing will ever get built, and no feelings will get hurt!

The Big Thinker

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Tonight, the president will make a speech from West Point in which he reveals his (not very) top secret new strategy for Afghanistan: sending 30,000 additional troops while sulking about it, and promising Al Qaeda and the Taliban that we'll pull all of our troops out again as soon as humanly possible.

The president is hoping that committing troops will be seen as actual commitment...but unfortunately, he isn't fooling anyone except his former far-left supporters like Michael Moore, who are accusing Obama of becoming a bloodsucking, imperialist warmonger who will break the hearts of young, idealistic voters and discourage them from ever returning to the polls. One can only hope...

TV Or Not TV

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
ABC is pairing Oprah and Obama to remind Americans what is
really important and meaningful about Christmas: politics and celebrity.

Hopefully the Queen of daytime TV will ask Obama why he and Michelle have made it a tradition not to give their daughters presents at Christmas, and what impact it could have on our economy if others decide to give up shopping in December. In fact, we'd like to suggest that Oprah get the president's reaction to the following scene from "Miracle on 34th Street," when an advisor lectures a politically ambitious judge on the fallout of killing Christmas sales...

"All right, you go back and tell them that there's no Santa Claus. It's all over the papers. The kids read it and they don't hang up their stockings. Now what happens to all the toys that are supposed to be in those stockings? Nobody buys them. The toy manufacturers are going to like that; so they have to lay off a lot of their employees, union employees. Now you got the CIO and the AF of L against you and they're going to adore you for it and they're going to say it with votes.

Oh, and the department stores are going to love you too and the Christmas card makers and the candy companies. Ho ho. Barack, you're going to be an awful popular fella. And what about the Salvation Army? Why, they got a Santa Claus on every corner, and they're taking a fortune.

But you go ahead Barack, you do it your way. You go on back in there and tell them that you rule there is no Santy Claus. Go on. But if you do, remember this: you can count on getting just two votes, your own and that district attorney's out there".

Brain Freeze

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
The so-called "Climategate" scandal has revealed that top climate scientists have altered, hidden, and invented data to falsely promote the theory of manmade global warming. Yet the president is going to Copenhagen (on his way to pick up his Nobel Peace Prize) to announce a U.S. pledge to cut CO2 emissions by 17%...a target impossible to reach without crippling American industry.

Assuming the president isn't an idiot, and isn't surrounded by idiots, then one can only presume that his actual goal is the crippling of the American economy. If this sends a chill down your spine, you'd better get used to it - "global warming" won't give you any relief...

BONUS: Just in time for the holiday season, the Democrats clarify their position on emissions!

GateCrasherGate

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Only months after Al Qaeda proved it could sneak suicide bombers past security using rectal bombs, the Whitehouse let two unauthorized assholes mingle with world leaders at Obama's first state dinner.
Presumably because of his safe, all-American name, Tareq Salahi and his wife were able to walk in without invitations and be photographed with Rahm Emanuel, Joe Biden, and Barack Obama. Security was apparently lax because 9/11 is "so eight years ago," and there hasn't been another successful terrorist attack on U.S. soil for...well...almost 3 weeks.

In any event, to prevent future imposters from getting into the Whitehouse,
Hope n' Change suggests that birth certificates be checked at the door...

UPDATE: there are now reports that the party-crashers have a relationship with Obama going back 5 years, and that Tareq Salahi has served as a Palestinian lobbyist. So perhaps they just got waved in when they said "we're friends of Obama...and enemies of Israel."

Two people who shouldn't be in the Whitehouse...and some party crashers.

An Economy Never Forgets

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
With almost 1 in 5 Americans either out of work or underemployed, you'd think that encouraging job growth would be somewhere on the president's radar. But no, he's busy pushing anti-job healthcare measures, anti-job deficit spending, anti-job taxes on small businesses, and posing for GQ Magazine.

Experts say that it could easily be 2012 before the job market sees significant recovery. Which, just coincidentally, is when Obama should be filing for unemployment!

Giving Thanks

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
According to the latest Rasmussen poll, support for the Democrats' healthcare plan has fallen to an all-time low, with only 38% in favor. Only 14% of those polled believe that "healthcare reform" will actually reduce medical costs...and those 14% aren't exactly the sharpest carving knives at the holiday table, if you know what we mean.

Obamacare is especially unpopular with senior citizens, who will be losing their Medicare Advantage plans, taking the brunt of $500 billion in cuts to Medicare and (page 1,637, paragraph C, subsection 2), "be cast adrift on ice floes, their wails and lamentations lost to the crashing waves."

But it hasn't happened yet...and hopefully next year at this time, we'll be giving thanks that it never will. Until then, HAPPY THANKSGIVING from Hope n' Change Cartoons!

Falling Job Numbers

Click Cartoon for Larger Size
Unemployment numbers rose again in October, with more and more people giving up hope of finding jobs (though hopefully they'll keep away from tall buildings and ledges).

To respond to the urgent jobs crisis, Barack Obama took an Asian photo-op tour and reminisced about eating ice cream, invited Khalid Sheikh Mohammed for an all-expenses-paid trip to New York, and demonstrated his support for the common worker by inviting Hollywood's biggest elites to a Whitehouse party.

Obama also plans to hold a "Jobs Summit" in the coming months (hey, no rush...) during which the person who draws the short straw will have to tell the president that there aren't any new jobs. Except for the people who scrape those messy city sidewalks...
